ARE EPICUREAN CUTTING BOARDS SAFE FOR FOOD CONTACT?Updated an hour ago
Epicurean’s paper composite material is safe for food contact. The material has seven main food safety certifications/declarations. Please see this information:
#1 NSF Certification
Epicurean's in-line and best-selling cutting boards made from our paper composite material hold NSF Certification. Our material also holds NSF certification. Both Epicurean and our paper composite listings are found on nsf.org.
Within the food safety testing certification industry, NSF has a reputation for being stringent and meticulous.
· NSF verifies the cleanability and sanitation of products through a physical evaluation of the design and construction. If all requirements of the design and construction are met, products are considered easily cleanable.
· NSF has specific material requirements – the materials used must be safe for food contact and must be smooth and easily cleanable – as to not allow food, debris, bacteria, etc. to become trapped.
· NSF performs a review of the suppliers’ raw material formulation to confirm compliance and safety of the material.
#2 EU 10/2011 (EU 1935/2004) food safety certification – which sets safety requirements for materials intended to come in contact with food. Regulation ensures that food contact materials do not threaten human health, or change the composition, odor, or taste of the food product.
#3 REACH certification - REACH certification, or Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals certification, is a European Union (EU) regulation that requires companies to register and evaluate chemicals used in the EU.
#4 GreenGuard Gold certification - GREENGUARD Certification ensures that a product has met some of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low emissions of VOCs. Our suppliers’ formaldehyde emissions are well below EPA’s Formaldehyde Emission regulation. The stated allowable amount of formaldehyde emissions are .05ppm. Our suppliers’ emissions, as tested by UL and certified by GREENGUARD, are <0.00lppm. Gold is the highest level of certification.
#5 RoHS Compliant certification - RoHS, or Restriction of Hazardous Substances, is a set of European Union (EU) regulations that limit the use of hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment (EEE).
#6 Health Product Declaration - A Health Product Declaration (HPD) is a standardized way for manufacturers to report the materials in a product and the health effects of those materials. HPDs are also an important tool for architects and designers to select eco-friendly building materials and products.
HPDs give full transparency of the material components and results of evaluations.
#7 Declare Certification – Declare Certification is a product transparency disclosure which allows consumers to understand a product’s composition and potential impact. Epicurean’s paper composite material is “Living Building Challenge (LBC) Red List Approved”, which means the products disclose a minimum of 99% of ingredients present in the final product and meet the LBC Red List imperative requirements through one or move approved exceptions.
